The Chief Surveyor will manage and supervise all surveying activities for the project, including survey-control verification, topographic surveys, road setting-out, levelling, cross-sections, quantity calculations, and as-built surveys.
The candidate must have strong knowledge of ellipsoidal and orthometric heights. The project survey data is based on ellipsoidal heights, and the Chief Surveyor must ensure that these values are correctly processed and are not mixed with orthometric elevations without an approved conversion method.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage and supervise all project survey teams and activities.
- Verify, establish, maintain, and protect the project’s GCPs, survey pillars, Benchmarks (BMs), Control Points, and temporary benchmarks.
- Check the project coordinate system, datum, projection, control coordinates, and height-reference system.
- Understand and correctly manage ellipsoidal heights, orthometric heights, geoid undulation, and vertical datums.
- Ensure consistent use of the project’s approved ellipsoidal survey data.
- Perform GNSS/DGPS, total-station, traverse, levelling, and closure checks.
- Set out and verify the road centerline, chainages, curves, grades, offsets, slopes, formation widths, and construction limits.
- Set out and check culverts, drainage channels, retaining walls, and other road structures.
- Conduct original-ground, progress, cross-section, and final as-built surveys.
- Prepare and check level sheets for earthworks, subgrade, sub-base, base course, asphalt layers, culverts, drainage works, and retaining walls.
- Clearly state the applicable height system on level sheets and survey records.
- Calculate excavation, embankment, pavement-layer, structural-excavation, backfilling, and other roadwork quantities.
- Prepare profiles, cross-sections, digital terrain models, surfaces, and quantity reports.
- Provide verified survey quantities for progress reports and interim payment applications.
- Coordinate joint measurements with the Quality Control Team, Survey Team, subcontractors, and client representatives.
- Prepare and maintain survey reports, control-point registers, level sheets, field books, quantity calculations, and as-built drawings.
- Ensure all survey equipment is calibrated, checked, protected, and properly operated.
- Report survey discrepancies, damaged control points, design conflicts, and measurement errors immediately.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Survey Engineering, Geomatics, Geodesy, Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a closely related field. A master’s degree in a relevant field will be preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 10 years of professional surveying experience.
- At least 7 years of surveying experience on road or highway projects.
- Previous experience as Chief Surveyor, Senior Surveyor, or Survey Manager is required.
