Job Descriptions:

Summary

The Nurse – Thalassemia Unit is responsible for providing quality nursing care to children diagnosed with thalassemia receiving treatment at the Thalassemia Unit of Abu Ali Sina Balkhi Hospital in Mazar-e-Sharif. The position is primarily responsible for safe blood transfusion, intravenous cannulation, monitoring patients before, during, and after transfusion, and ensuring adherence to infection prevention and patient safety standards.

The nurse will contribute to the management and follow-up of approximately 400 registered thalassemia patients across the northern region and support the delivery of nursing services to an average of 35 - 40 pediatric patients daily. The position also plays an important role in providing guidance and assistance to patients and caregivers throughout different health service departments.

Duties and Responsibilities

·         Perform safe and timely blood transfusions for pediatric thalassemia patients in accordance with national clinical guidelines and organizational procedures.

·         Perform intravenous (IV) cannulation for children while ensuring patient comfort and safety.

·         Monitor patients before, during, and after blood transfusion and promptly report any adverse transfusion reactions.

·         Maintain accurate nursing records, transfusion documentation, and patient files.

·         Assist in the management and follow-up of approximately 400 registered thalassemia patients across the northern zone.

·         Provide nursing services to an average of 40 pediatric patients per day.

·         Educate children and caregivers on treatment plans, blood transfusion procedures, medication adherence, nutrition, and follow-up appointments.

·         Support physicians and other healthcare professionals during medical examinations and emergency situations.

·         Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control (IPC) measures, patient safety protocols, and organizational policies.

·         Assist patients and caregivers in navigating different hospital departments and facilitate access to required health services.

·         Maintain confidentiality of patient information and uphold professional nursing ethics.

·         Monitor and report shortages of medical supplies and support inventory management when required.

·         Perform any other nursing-related duties assigned by the supervisor.

Duty Station

The selected candidate will be based at the Thalassemia Unit, Abu Ali Sina Balkhi Hospital, Mazar-e-Sharif, and will support the delivery of specialized nursing services for children with thalassemia.

Working Days: Saturday, Monday, and Wednesday

Job Requirements:

Qualifications

·         Diploma in Nursing from a recognized nursing institute.

·         Valid nursing registration/license from the relevant Afghan health authority is preferred.

Experience

·         Minimum of two (2) years of professional nursing experience.

·         Experience in pediatric nursing, blood transfusion services, hematology, or thalassemia care is highly desirable.

·         Experience working in hospitals, NGOs, or humanitarian health projects is considered an asset.

Skills and Competencies

·         Strong clinical skills in blood transfusion and intravenous cannulation.

·         Good understanding of pediatric nursing care and emergency response.

·         Knowledge of infection prevention and control (IPC) standards.

·         Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

·         Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple patients effectively.

·         Strong documentation, reporting, and record-keeping skills.

·         Commitment to patient-centered care, confidentiality, and professional ethics.

Computer Skills

·         Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

·         Ability to maintain electronic patient records and reports is an advantage.

Languages

·         Fluency in Dari is required.

·         Knowledge of Pashto is highly desirable.

·         Basic English language skills are considered an advantage.
