Job Descriptions:

The Resilience Food System (RFS) project, funded by the World Food Programme (WFP), aims to strengthen household food security, improve resilience, and promote sustainable agricultural livelihoods.

 

The Agriculture Extension Assistant will directly support beneficiaries through technical guidance, training, and facilitation of agricultural practices, ensuring improved productivity, income generation, and food availability at the household and community level

Shelter for Life implements safe and PSEA-sensitive human resources practices
and processes throughout recruitment, contracting, and performance management to ensure the safety and well-being of all staff and beneficiaries.

Job Requirements:

The Agriculture Extension Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Providing technical support to beneficiaries on tube filter irrigation systems, including installation, operation, and maintenance.
  • Organizing and facilitating technical training sessions on sustainable agriculture practices.
  • Promoting vermicomposting techniques to improve soil fertility and organic farming practices.
  • Supporting beneficiaries in kitchen gardening and home gardening for enhanced household nutrition and dietary diversity.
  • Assisting in plantation activities, including fruit and forest trees.
  • Conducting scope registration of beneficiaries in accordance with project requirements.
  • Supporting Cash-Based Transfer (CBT) distribution activities as per WFP guidelines.
  • Facilitating market linkages for farmers to sell agricultural produce and improve income opportunities.
  • Providing guidance on irrigation methods, crop fertilization, pest and disease management, and integrated crop protection techniques.
  • Delivering technical advice on post-harvest management of fruits and vegetables to reduce losses and maintain quality.
  • Ensuring inclusion of women and vulnerable groups in all agriculture-related trainings and project activities.
  • Preparing activity reports, documenting lessons learned, and submitting timely updates to supervisors.
  • Supporting the establishment and operationalization of Milk Collection Centers, including training farmers on milk handling, quality control, and hygienic practices.
  • Assisting in the management and utilization of Cold Storage facilities, ensuring proper storage, handling, and preservation of perishable agricultural products.
  • Providing awareness and capacity building to farmers on value addition and storage techniques to extend the shelf life of dairy and horticultural products.
  • Linking farmer groups and cooperatives with Milk Collection Centers and Cold Storages to strengthen local value chains and reduce post-harvest losses.
  • Performing any other related duties assigned by the Project Manager or Agriculture Officer.

Qualification/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Extension or related field.
  • 4 to 5 years relevant work experience in the field of Agriculture and Agriculture Extension with NGOs, INGOs or UN agencies.
  • Practical knowledge of irrigation, fertilization, pest and disease management, and post-harvest handling of fruits and vegetables.
  • Familiarity with vermicomposting, home/kitchen gardening, and plantation techniques.
  • Experience in beneficiary registration and CBT distribution is an asset.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and reporting skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with rural communities, respecting local customs and traditions.
  • Computer skills at the operator level, especially with MS Office packages.
  • Fluency in English and Dari and/or Pashto, both written and spoken.
  • Ability or experience in the field of community driven development projects monitoring
  • High attention to detail, effective time management skills, strong work ethic, a willingness to learn new skills, and the ability to be a self-starter.
  • Experience in planning, reporting and budgeting.
  • Good communication skill and able to pass the massage/questions in local languages to the respondents.
  • Have good interpersonal skills and ability to plan work.
  • Regional and cultural knowledge of areas of SFL field operations in Afghanistan
  • Willingness to work long hours when required
  • Ability and willingness to travel to the project sites and outside of duty station within Afghanistan and adjust to the SFL environment as frequently as required
  • Honest, proactive, well mannered, and must share values of SFL.

  • Ready to work, live and travel in an intricate and strenuous environment
