The health/medical program at Muslim Hands International - Afghanistan aims to align with the organization's overall goals while maintaining and expanding existing programs. The Mother Kind Clinic (MKC), located in the Pol-e-Charki area of Kabul, is a key project supported by MHI. This clinic offers comprehensive maternity care, including gynecological services, pre and postnatal care, and psychological support to mothers in the surrounding areas. In addition to the services outlined, the clinic goes above and beyond to meet the needs of its patients.

Job Descriptions:

As a Psycho-Social Counselor at MH-AFG Mother Kind clinic, you will play a crucial role in providing trauma-informed counseling and support services to women who have experienced substance abuse and gender-based violence (GBV). Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, your responsibilities will involve offering compassionate guidance, therapeutic interventions, and practical assistance to help clients address their trauma and challenges related to violence.

Key Responsibilities:

Trauma-Informed Counseling:

  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions for women accessing the clinic who have experienced violence.
  • Utilize trauma-informed approaches to help clients process their experiences, manage emotions, and develop coping skills.
  • Foster a safe and supportive therapeutic environment where clients can explore their feelings, fears, and recovery goals.

 

Psychoeducation and Skill Building:

  • Deliver psychoeducational workshops and skill-building sessions on topics such as trauma recovery, stress management, self-care, and healthy relationships.
  • Equip clients with practical tools and strategies to navigate challenges related to violence, trauma triggers, and safety planning.

 

Case Management and Referral:

  • Conduct comprehensive psychosocial assessments to identify client needs, strengths, and treatment and recovery goals.
  • Collaborate with clients to develop individualized treatment plans with achievable objectives and milestones.
  • Coordinate referrals to external resources and support services, including mental health providers.
  • Advocate for the rights and needs of women affected by psychosocial trauma within the clinic and the broader community.
  • Empower clients to assert their boundaries, access resources, and make informed decisions regarding their health, safety, and well-being.
  • Collaborate with peer workers and other team members to cultivate a culture of empowerment and mutual support.

 

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of client assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, and outcomes in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare reports and summaries of counseling activities, program outcomes, and client feedback to support program monitoring, evaluation, and quality improvement efforts.
Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or a related field is required. Licensure or certification as a professional counselor or therapist, along with a university degree, would be an added advantage.
  • Specialized training or experience in trauma-informed care, GBV, and substance abuse treatment is highly desirable.
  • Minimum of five years of experience providing counseling or therapy to individuals with complex trauma histories, including survivors of GBV and substance abuse.
  • Strong understanding of the intersectionality of trauma, substance use, and social determinants of health, particularly as they relate to women's experiences.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and crisis intervention skills, with the ability to establish rapport and build trust with diverse clients.
