Position Summary:
The Livestock Specialist will lead the design, implementation, and monitoring of livestock-related interventions under the PREVALE Project. This includes conducting value chain assessments, identifying service and input gaps, supporting backyard poultry and small ruminant development, and strengthening localized livestock services. The role ensures that livestock activities contribute to improved food security, household income, and climate-resilient livelihoods
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Livestock Value Chain Assessment
- Conduct desk reviews and secondary data analysis on livestock production, services, and markets.
- Map stakeholders and identify service providers (veterinary, feed, input suppliers).
- Collect field-level data on livestock production, marketing, and service delivery.
- Analyze localized input and service gaps, including veterinary coverage, feed/fodder availability, and extension services.
- Assess market channels and demand for livestock products (meat, milk, eggs, wool, skins).
- Facilitate validation and prioritization workshops with communities and stakeholders.
2. Backyard Poultry, Sheep, and Goat Development
- Design and deliver training programs for households on poultry, sheep, and goat husbandry.
- Provide technical input packages (vaccination, feed, housing, breeding practices).
- Support women and vulnerable groups in adopting small-scale livestock enterprises.
- Promote improved breeds and climate-resilient practices for small ruminants and poultry.
3. Service and Input Development
- Strengthen localized veterinary services through mobile clinics and community-based providers.
- Support establishment of fodder banks and forage crop production (alfalfa, clover).
- Facilitate linkages between farmers and input suppliers (feed, vaccines, equipment).
- Promote community-based livestock management systems.
4. Capacity Building & Training
- Organize training sessions for farmers, extension workers, and community groups.
- Develop training materials and manuals on livestock management, disease control, and nutrition.
- Build capacity of local service providers to ensure sustainability of interventions.
- Document lessons learned and best practices for scaling up.
5. Reporting & Compliance
- Prepare technical reports on livestock activities, assessments, and outcomes.
- Ensure compliance with donor requirements and project safeguarding standards.
Work Conditions
- Based in Kabul with frequent travel to project sites.
- Standard working hours with flexibility during training, workshops, or field missions.
