Job Purpose:
The MHPSS Trainer plays a key role in building the technical capacity of Psychosocial Workers (PSWs) to ensure high-quality, safe, and context-appropriate MHPSS services for crisis-affected communities. The position focuses on identifying learning needs, designing and delivering relevant training packages, and strengthening the practical skills and confidence of PSWs through ongoing coaching, supervision, and field-based mentoring.
The role also contributes to improving the well-being and functional outcomes of individuals experiencing mental health concerns, psychosocial distress, or disabilities, particularly those whose conditions have been aggravated by emergencies. The Trainer supports PSWs in applying appropriate tools, approaches, and intervention methods, and collaborates in the development and adaptation of MHPSS materials suited to local realities and humanitarian constraints.
Based in Nangarhar, the position will provide technical support primarily to HI’s teams in the province and may extend to neighboring operational locations such as Kunar, depending on program priorities. Time spent across sites will be organized according to team needs, workload distribution, and project requirements.
The role involves regular field travel, including to remote and hard-to-reach areas, to accompany mobile and static teams and ensure consistent implementation of MHPSS standards, clinical protocols, and safeguarding principles. By strengthening staff competencies and supporting quality service delivery, the MHPSS Trainer contributes directly to the overall effectiveness and responsiveness of HI’s MHPSS programming.
The Duties and responsibilities may include but not limited to:
- Technical Guidance and Support in MHPSS Trainings:
- Provide specialized technical support to the Project Supervisor, Project Manager, and field teams to ensure the effective and high-quality implementation of all MHPSS training activities.
- Ensure that all training content, methodologies, and tools align with HI’s global technical guidelines, international MHPSS standards, and evidence-based approaches.
- Adapt and contextualize existing training packages to reflect local needs, project objectives, and evolving technical priorities.
- Coordinate closely with key internal units including Logistics, MEAL, and the MHPSS Technical team to ensure smooth, coherent, and technically sound implementation of training initiatives.
- Capacity Building of HI and Partner Psychosocial worker (PSW):
- Conduct individual competency assessments of HI and/or partner PSWs using approved HI technical assessment tools.
- Develop a comprehensive capacity-building plan based on assessment results, field observations, feedback, and identified gaps in PSWs competencies.
- Define training topics, develop training frameworks, prepare session plans and share them with relevant departments for validation and coordination.
- Lead and facilitate the implementation of all capacity-building activities, including coaching, structured training sessions, mentorship, and follow-up support.
- Administer pre- and post-tests, conduct periodic assessments of training impact and ensure MHPSS service quality meets the minimum standards set by HI.
- Promote evidence-based practice by sharing new scientific findings, updated guidelines, and best practices in MHPSS for PSWs.
- Facilitate or support the delivery of internal, external and online MHPSS training opportunities for HI and partner staff.
- Provide technical coaching and on-the-job support during field visits to strengthen clinical practice and adherence to MHPSS protocols.
- Contribution to HI’s MHPSS Capacity-Building Influence:

- Represent HI’s MHPSS capacity-building expertise within local coordination networks, professional groups, and relevant sectoral platforms when requested.
- Support broader influence efforts by contributing to the development and dissemination of training tools, guidelines, and technical resources.
- Perform any additional tasks assigned by the Line Manager, Functional/Technical Manager, or Senior Management Team in support of project objectives.
- Reporting, Documentation, and Data Management:
- Support the project team in preparing periodic documentation such as training reports, case studies, newsletters, and success stories.
- Develop and submit weekly action plans, progress summaries, and technical reports to the Line Manager and Functional Manager in a timely manner.
- Collaborate with the MHPSS Technical specialist in drafting or updating training guidelines, protocols, SOPs, manuals, and other technical documents.
- Prepare training Terms of Reference (ToRs), attendance records, meeting minutes, and maintain systematic documentation for all training-related activities.
- Ensure timely feedback, technical advice, and improvement recommendations are shared with PSWs and project teams based on field observations and training outcomes.
- Maintain accurate data on capacity-building activities and contribute to ensuring data quality for reporting and monitoring purposes.
- Technical Learning, Knowledge Sharing, and Capitalization:
- Collect relevant information and documentation to support learning, capitalization, or scientific-review initiatives.
Participate in knowledge-sharing activities and contribute to integrating lessons learned and best practices into program implementation, under the supervision of the MHPSS Technical Specialist or Project Manager
