1. Purpose of the Position
The Midwife will be part of the Mobile Health Team and will be responsible for providing comprehensive reproductive, maternal, and neonatal health services to women and girls in vulnerable and displaced communities across Kandahar Province. The Midwife will ensure culturally sensitive, safe, and high-quality antenatal, postnatal, delivery counseling, and referral services. This role is essential to improving access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and maternal care for women in crisis-affected areas.
2. Key Responsibilities
Maternal and Reproductive Health Services
- Provide antenatal care (ANC), postnatal care (PNC), and family planning counseling in mobile health outreach settings
- Conduct safe delivery counseling, assess pregnancy-related complications, and ensure appropriate referrals
- Support maternal health awareness activities, including birth preparedness, breastfeeding, and nutrition
- Monitor the health of pregnant and postpartum women, newborns, and lactating mothers
- Administer medications, supplements (e.g., folic acid, iron), and basic medical treatments as per clinical protocols
Health Education and Community Engagement
- Conduct health education sessions for women and adolescent girls on maternal health, menstrual hygiene, family planning, and STIs
- Work closely with Community Mobilizers to increase community awareness and uptake of maternal health services
- Promote respectful maternity care and female participation in health-related decision-making at the household and community levels
Referral and Emergency Support
- Identify obstetric emergencies and support timely and appropriate referrals to health centers or hospitals
- Maintain linkages with the nearest BPHS/EPHS facilities for emergency cases and ensure proper follow-up
- Assist during emergency outreach interventions in response to urgent maternal health needs
Health Records and Reporting
- Maintain accurate and confidential health records, including ANC/PNC registers and referral logs
- Contribute to monthly health reports, ensuring data is disaggregated by age, pregnancy stage, and service type
- Coordinate with the MEL team to support data collection and feedback mechanisms related to maternal health services
Teamwork and Compliance
- Collaborate closely with the Medical Doctor, and Psychosocial Counselor to ensure integrated service delivery
- Adhere to clinical protocols, infection prevention and control (IPC) measures, and ethical conduct
- Participate in staff meetings, training, and refresher sessions to maintain professional standards
- Report any safeguarding or protection concerns identified during service delivery
3. Qualifications and Experience
Education
- Diploma or certificate in Midwifery from a recognized institute, approved by the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH)
- Valid registration with the Afghan Midwifery Association or relevant medical board
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in maternal and reproductive health services, including ANC and PNC
- Prior experience providing services in mobile health or community-based settings in emergency or humanitarian contexts
- Experience working with vulnerable women and girls, including IDPs, returnees, and underserved communities
- Previous work experience in Kandahar Province is required.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong clinical skills in maternal and reproductive health care
- Excellent interpersonal, counseling, and communication abilities
- Ability to work independently and as part of a mobile team in challenging environments
- Fluency in Pashto and Dari is required; basic English proficiency is an asset
- Knowledge of IPC standards, safeguarding principles, and gender-sensitive service delivery
4. Working Conditions
This position is based in Kandahar Province with frequent travel to district-level health outreach sites. The Midwife must be prepared to work in insecure, underserved, and conservative settings.
