Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) is one of the most comprehensive private, not‐for‐profit health care systems in the developing world with community health programs in large geographical areas in Central and South Asia, as well as in East Africa.

The Aga Khan Health Services, Afghanistan (AKHS, A) was established in 2003 as part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). AKHS, A provides health care services mainly on behalf of the government including the Ministry of Public Health’s of Afghanistan’s Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS) and Essential Package of Hospital Services (EPHS). AKHS, A is unique both in scale and scope, delivering critical health services along the continuum of care, from Community Health Workers (CHWs) to ISO certified hospital facilities.

AKHS, A is currently implementing healthcare services in Bamyan, Baghlan, Badakhshan, Kabul and Takhar provinces. The agency’s scope of work includes the provision of primary and secondary healthcare, preventive and curative medical care, Nursing and Midwifery education, Human Resources Development and Hospital Management. As BPHS and EPHS implementer, AKHS, A provides technical support as well as capacity building of health personnel, immunization services, nutrition trainings and the training of Community Health Nurses and Community Health Midwives.

AKHS, A draws on internal and other donor fundings to continue supplementary and complementary support to the national health system. Moreover, AKHS, A has introduced innovations, including, expansions of e-Health services, e-learning initiatives, and cross border arrangements. To promote healthy environment, AKHS, A is also implementing net zero and greenhouse gas emission initiatives.

General Responsibilities:

• Medication management of the hospital.
• Stock management of the pharmacy department.
• Proper medication distribution to OPD, wards and Emergency room.
• Arrangements for DTC meetings.
• Preparing weekly, monthly and quarterly reports regarding the 11 KPI, IMAT, ARI, RMU and Usage of Formular.
• Maintaining the safety of drug distribution and privacy of the related department.

Task Description:

Consumptions of IPD and Emergency:

• Every week, calculate rigorously the used total for each item and submit report of weekly consumption after reconciliation with prescriptions on weekly basis. (IPD patients/emergency patients
• Every month, calculate rigorously the used total of each item and report it on the monthly consumption form.
• Collect and keep all those forms in the monthly IPD/Emergency file and send one copy to Central Pharmacy.

Inventory:

• Every month the inventory for IPD stock, nursing room, delivery room, and emergency room.
• IPD stock: count the entire item and write the amount on the stock cards.
• Nursing room/Delivery room: count all the medical materials and write in the monthly consumption paper.
• Emergency room: count all the items and write on the stock cards.

Stocks:

• Each time any item is taken or supplies in stocks, report the amount and expiry date on the stock card correctly and rigorously.
• Report the drugs which are expiring in the pharmacy.
• Considering FEFO and FIFO.

Orders:

• In close collaboration with the Hospital Manager, make a monthly order to the central pharmacy stock of Bamyan on the proper form and according to the monthly consumption.
• In case of shortage during the month, order necessary items from the IPD stock.

Drug Distribution:

• To ensure that medicines are distributed based on the doctor’s order.
• To ensure that medicines are distributed with correct medicine, correct dose, correct route, correct amount, correct amount.
• Distribute drugs in plastic bags avoiding contact with the hands.
• Write the name of the patient, the name of the drug, the dosage, and indicate the medication frequency on the table bag.
• Provide verbal instructions on medication usage, including:

• Frequency of administration
• Proper method of taking the medication
• Duration of treatment (especially emphasizing completion of antibiotics even if symptoms resolve)
• Ask patients to repeat instructions to ensure understanding.
• If unsure about any prescription, consult with the prescribing doctor before dispensing.
• Oral Rehydration Solution: show and explain with material how to prepare the ORS in front of the patient properly.
• Vitamin A: give directly to the patient the correct dosage (100,000 or 200,000 I.U) near the pharmacy door.
• Record the drug quantities dispensed for patients on the daily consumption form.
• Never give drugs to a child patient under 14 years old without an adult escort presence.
• Never allow unauthorized persons to dispense drugs. If on break, close the pharmacy or assign a replacement.
• At the end of the day, securely close all medication bottles, store drugs properly, and lock the pharmacy.

Education:

 Diploma in Pharmacy or equivalent

Experience:

• 2 years having remarkable experience in the Pharmacy Department with any INGO

Skills: 

• Demonstrated knowledge of hospital pharmacy operations and medication management, and having a good level of knowledge of duty station responsibilities

Languages: Fluency in English and Local Language(s)
