Position Summary

The Internal Medicine Specialist is responsible for providing comprehensive, evidence-based medical care to adult patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. As a specialist in a tertiary care Cure Hospital, the incumbent manages complex medical conditions, provides consultation to other specialties, supervises junior doctors and medical trainees, participates in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, and contributes to research, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, investigate, and manage a broad range of acute and chronic medical conditions.
  • Conduct daily ward rounds and provide specialist consultations for hospitalized patients.
  • Manage patients in outpatient clinics, emergency department consultations, and critical care referrals.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans based on evidence-based clinical guidelines.
  • Interpret laboratory, radiological, and other diagnostic investigations.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary care with surgery, ICU, obstetrics, pediatrics, radiology, pathology, rehabilitation, and nursing teams.
  • Manage patients with chronic diseases including:
    • Diabetes Mellitus
    • Hypertension
    • Heart Failure
    • Chronic Kidney Disease
    • Chronic Liver Disease
    • COPD & Asthma
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Autoimmune Disorders
    • Endocrine Disorders
  • Perform procedures within scope of practice (lumbar puncture, pleural aspiration, abdominal paracentesis, central venous access, etc., where credentialed).
  • Participate in the consultant on-call roster and respond promptly to emergencies.
  • Ensure complete and accurate medical documentation.

2. Teaching Responsibilities

As a teaching hospital, the Internal Medicine Specialist shall:

  • Provide bedside teaching to medical students.
  • Supervise officers, interns, residents, and registrars.
  • Conduct clinical case presentations and grand rounds.
  • Deliver lectures, tutorials, journal clubs, and seminars.
  • Mentor junior physicians in clinical decision-making.
  • Participate in Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), assessments, and examinations.
  • Assist in curriculum development where required.
  • Promote continuous medical education (CME).

3. Research Responsibilities

  • Participate in clinical research projects.
  • Encourage evidence-based medicine.
  • Conduct clinical audits.
  • Publish research findings where possible.
  • Present research at scientific meetings.
  • Participate in morbidity and mortality meetings.

4. Quality Improvement & Patient Safety

  • Adhere to hospital clinical protocols and international best practices.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Conduct mortality and morbidity reviews.
  • Promote infection prevention and control.
  • Report adverse clinical events.
  • Participate in patient safety committees.
  • Ensure rational prescribing and antimicrobial stewardship.

 

5. Administrative Responsibilities

  • Participate in departmental meetings.
  • Assist in preparing duty rosters when required.
  • Ensure timely discharge summaries.
  • Maintain accurate medical records.
  • Assist in departmental planning and service development.
  • Submit monthly activity reports as required.
  • Participate in accreditation and quality assurance activities.

Additional Responsibilities as a Teaching Hospital

Given Cure Hospital's role as a tertiary care teaching institution, the Internal Medicine Specialist is expected to:

  • Lead bedside teaching and ward rounds with interns and residents.
  • Supervise postgraduate trainees and medical students.
  • Participate in curriculum implementation and academic assessments.
  • Contribute to clinical research, publications, and quality improvement projects.
  • Foster a culture of evidence-based practice, mentorship, and continuous learning across the department.
Job Requirements:

Qualifications

Education

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) from a recognized medical university.
  • Completion of residency/specialization in Internal Medicine.  
  • Fellowship or subspecialty training is an advantage.

Experience

Essential:

  • Minimum 5 years of post-specialization clinical experience in Internal Medicine.
  • Experience in a tertiary referral hospital.

Desirable:

  • Experience in a teaching hospital.
  • Experience supervising residents, interns, or medical students.
  • Experience in clinical research and audits.
