About AKHS-A (Aga Khan Health Service-Afghanistan):

The Aga Khan Health Services, Afghanistan (AKHS, A) was established in 2003 as part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). AKHS, A provides health care services mainly on behalf of the government including the Ministry of Public Health’s of Afghanistan’s Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS) and Essential Package of Hospital Services (EPHS). AKHS, A is unique both in scale and scope, delivering critical health services along the continuum of care, from Community Health Workers (CHWs) to ISO certified hospital facilities.

AKHS, A is currently implementing healthcare services in Bamyan, Baghlan, Badakhshan, Kabul and Takhar provinces. The agency’s scope of work includes the provision of primary and secondary healthcare, preventive and curative medical care, Nursing and Midwifery education, Human Resources Development and Hospital Management. As BPHS and EPHS implementer, AKHS, A provides technical support as well as capacity building of health personnel, immunization services, nutrition trainings and the training of Community Health Nurses and Community Health Midwives.

AKHS, A draws on internal and other donor fundings to continue supplementary and complementary support to the national health system. Moreover, AKHS, A has introduced innovations, including, expansions of e-Health services, e-learning initiatives, and cross border arrangements. To promote healthy environment, AKHS, A is also implementing net zero and greenhouse gas emission initiatives.

Job Descriptions:

Job Purpose:

The OPD (Outpatient Department) Coordinator plays a key leadership and operational role in ensuring the smooth, safe, and effective delivery of outpatient and Emergency services. The position is ideally suited for a qualified MD with experience in clinical coordination, patient management, and team supervision. The OPD Coordinator will oversee clinical and administrative functions, ensure quality patient care, manage staff performance, and enhance patient flow and satisfaction.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical and Operational Coordination:

  • Supervise daily OPD clinical operations, including patient flow, triage, doctor allocation, and emergency prioritization.
  • Ensure BPHS health facilities’ patient referral to PH prioritization and tracking.
  • Ensure timely consultation and appropriate follow-up for all OPD cases, especially for urgent and emergency patients.
  • Ensure full presence and punctuality of OPD doctors and related staff, taking corrective action when necessary.
  • Make regular rounds in both male and female waiting areas to assess patient needs and fast-track critical cases.
  • Coordinate with relevant departments for seamless referrals, diagnostics, and admissions when needed.
  • Conduct OPD based on the need.

Patient Interaction and Administrative Support:

  • Greet patients and visitors with professionalism and compassion, in alignment with the hospital’s mission and values.
  • Ensure accurate and timely registration of all patients; oversee the patient “arrival” process.
  • Assist patients in scheduling additional tests, consultations, or follow-up appointments.
  • Address patient inquiries and complaints promptly and courteously; escalate as needed.

Quality Assurance and Process Improvement:

  • Support adherence to national clinical guidelines, infection prevention and control (IPC), and internal SOPs.
  • Liaise regularly with the Clinical Manager to review workflows, resolve issues, and introduce operational improvements.
  • Participate in internal audits, case reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.

Staff Supervision and Development:

  • Provide mentoring and guidance to OPD staff including junior doctors, nurses, and administrative personnel.
  • Organize and participate in training and capacity-building activities for department staff.
  • Participate in the hospital’s staff appraisal and performance review processes.

Communication and Safety:

  • Use formal communication channels to report issues, risks, or grievances.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, report incidents or accidents as per hospital policy.
  • Attend fire safety lectures and drills; be aware of emergency exits, alarms, and equipment.

Health Promotion and Public Engagement:

  • Organize and lead health education and public health awareness sessions in the OPD setting (male and female waiting areas).
  • Support community education efforts on preventive health and disease management.

 

Job Requirements:
  • Medical Doctor (MD) with a valid practicing license, Internal Specialist preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience, with at least 3 years in outpatient at BPHS/EPHS settings.
  • Experience in healthcare coordination or clinical supervision preferred.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong problem-solving ability and decision-making capacity under pressure.
  • Familiarity with EPHS, IPC standards, and patient safety protocols.
  • Proficient in health reporting systems (e.g., HMIS) and basic medical data analysis.
  • Proficiency in Dari, Pashto, English.
  • Report writing and Computer Skill.
