Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) is one of the most comprehensive private, not‐for‐profit health care systems in the developing world with community health programs in large geographical areas in Central and South Asia, as well as in East Africa.

The Aga Khan Health Services, Afghanistan (AKHS, A) was established in 2003 as part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). AKHS, A provides health care services mainly on behalf of the government including the Ministry of Public Health’s of Afghanistan’s Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS) and Essential Package of Hospital Services (EPHS). AKHS, A is unique both in scale and scope, delivering critical health services along the continuum of care, from Community Health Workers (CHWs) to ISO certified hospital facilities.

AKHS, A is currently implementing healthcare services in Bamyan, Baghlan, Badakhshan, Kabul and Takhar provinces. The agency’s scope of work includes the provision of primary and secondary healthcare, preventive and curative medical care, Nursing and Midwifery education, Human Resources Development and Hospital Management. As BPHS and EPHS implementer, AKHS, A provides technical support as well as capacity building of health personnel, immunization services, nutrition trainings and the training of Community Health Nurses and Community Health Midwives.

AKHS, A draws on internal and other donor fundings to continue supplementary and complementary support to the national health system. Moreover, AKHS, A has introduced innovations, including, expansions of e-Health services, e-learning initiatives, and cross border arrangements. To promote healthy environment, AKHS, A is also implementing net zero and greenhouse gas emission initiatives.

Job Descriptions:

1. Staff Management and Development

  • Supervise and support pharmacy staff, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and assistants.
  • Conduct regular training sessions to enhance staff knowledge and skills.
  • Evaluate staff performance and provide constructive feedback.
  • Ensure compliance with AKHS-A policies and procedures.

2. Pharmacy Operations

  • Oversee the dispensing of medications, ensuring accuracy and adherence to prescriptions.
  • Manage the preparation of intravenous (IV) solutions, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and other specialized pharmaceutical preparations.
  • Implement and monitor medication storage protocols to maintain drug efficacy and safety.
  • Ensure the proper handling and disposal of expired or unused medications.

3. Inventory and Stock Management

  • Monitor and manage pharmacy inventory levels to prevent shortages or overstock situations.
  • Coordinate with the logistics department to ensure timely procurement of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies.
  • Conduct regular stock audits and reconcile discrepancies.
  • Implement the First-In-First-Out (FIFO) method for medication dispensation.

4. Quality Assurance and Compliance

  • Ensure adherence to national and AKHS-A pharmaceutical policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and report on medication usage patterns to identify potential issues.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and audits.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all pharmacy activities.

5. Patient Care and Counseling

  • Provide medication counseling to patients, explaining proper usage, potential side effects, and storage requirements.
  • Address patient inquiries and concerns regarding medications.
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers to optimize patient medication therapy.

6. Reporting and Documentation

  • Prepare and submit regular reports on pharmacy activities, including inventory levels, medication usage, and staff performance.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of all pharmacy transactions and communications.
  • Ensure confidentiality and security of patient and pharmacy information.

7. Emergency Preparedness and Response

  • Assist in the preparation and maintenance of emergency medical supplies and kits.
  • Participate in emergency response drills and real-life situations as required.
  • Ensure the pharmacy's readiness to support emergency medical services.
Job Requirements:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in pharmacy.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in a pharmacy setting, with at least 1 year in a supervisory role.
  • Licensing: Valid pharmacy license as per national regulations.
  • Skills:
    • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Proficiency in pharmacy management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Knowledge of pharmaceutical laws and regulations.
    • Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
