Hand in Hand Afghanistan Organization (HIHAO) is a not-for-profit organization based in Afghanistan. It started operations in 2007. HIHAO is part of the international Hand in Hand (HiH) network of independent organizations, working together towards a shared vision to alleviate poverty through job creation. The overall Hand in Hand mission is to promote the economic and social empowerment of women, by supporting the creation of sustainable enterprises, improved livelihoods and jobs.
HIHAO has implemented projects funded by DFID, European Union, CAFOD, WFP, GIZ, USAID, WB, DANIDA, Sida, Hilti foundation, UNOCHA and Hand in Hand International through its main office in Mazar-e-Sharif, Balkh province of Afghanistan.
Building on Hand in Hand’s previous projects that focused on livelihood and food security, Hand in Hand Afghanistan (HIHAO) together with their international network partner Hand in Hand International (HiH Int.) will target households and women in a semi-urban part of Sar-e-Pul province. This 24-months project aims to equip Afghan households and women with the skills and knowledge to improve the food security and nutrition of their families for the long-term and on a sustainable basis by expanding existing or starting new businesses in the semi-urban agriculture sector. This will help them to add variation to their diet, participate in the market economy and thereby raise their families out of poverty, ensuring a lasting impact on food security. The project will combine short-term and long-term interventions and focuses on a semi-urban part of Herat Province, which is home to a mix of IDPs, returnees and members of the host community.
