The Mapping & Mineral Exploration Geologist is responsible for conducting and supervising geological mapping, mineral exploration, and iron ore resource evaluation activities. The incumbent will work closely with the Mining Project Manager, Mining Engineer, and Geology Department to identify, assess, and evaluate iron ore deposits and support the development of reliable geological models and mineral resource estimates.

The role involves geological mapping, sampling, drilling, core logging, geophysical and geochemical investigations, data analysis, and technical reporting to guide exploration, mine planning, and extraction activities. The Geologist will ensure that exploration programs are conducted accurately, safely, cost-effectively, and in compliance with applicable mining regulations and environmental standards.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

Geological Mapping and Iron Ore Exploration

• Conduct geological mapping and surveys in identified iron ore exploration areas.
• Identify and document iron-bearing formations, mineralized zones, geological structures, and ore bodies.
• Prepare geological maps, cross-sections, and technical reports based on field observations and exploration data.
• Design and implement exploration programs, including geological mapping, surface sampling, trenching, and drilling.
• Conduct mineral prospecting to identify potential iron ore deposits and areas requiring further exploration.
• Assess geological formations and mineralization patterns to support exploration and mine development.
• Develop and maintain exploration plans, budgets, and implementation schedules.
• Coordinate exploration activities with the Mining and Geology Departments.

Geological Sampling and Data Collection

• Collect and supervise the collection of rock, soil, channel, trench, and drill core samples.
• Ensure proper sample identification, labeling, documentation, preservation, and transportation.
• Develop and implement sampling procedures to maintain data quality and reliability.
• Coordinate sample preparation and laboratory analysis of iron ore samples.
• Monitor iron ore quality indicators, including iron content (Fe), silica (SiO₂), alumina (Al₂O₃), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S), where applicable.
• Maintain accurate records of geological observations, sample results, and exploration activities.
• Ensure proper chain-of-custody procedures for geological samples.

Drilling and Core Logging

• Plan and coordinate geological drilling programs for subsurface exploration.
• Assist in selecting drilling locations based on geological information and exploration objectives.
• Supervise drilling contractors and monitor drilling progress and performance.
• Conduct and supervise core logging, including lithology, mineralization, alteration, weathering, fractures, and geological structures.
• Ensure accurate recording of drill hole information, core recovery, and sample intervals.
• Coordinate drill core sampling and quality control procedures.
• Review laboratory results and integrate drilling data into geological interpretations.
• Prepare drilling progress reports and technical recommendations for further exploration.

Geophysical and Geochemical Exploration

• Plan and coordinate geophysical surveys to support iron ore exploration.
• Supervise applicable magnetic, electrical, gravity, and other geophysical investigations.
• Coordinate geochemical exploration programs for soil, rock, and other relevant samples.
• Interpret geophysical and geochemical results alongside geological mapping and drilling data.
• Identify potential mineralized zones and recommend additional exploration activities.
• Maintain accurate records of geophysical and geochemical survey results.
• Ensure exploration methods are selected according to geological conditions and project requirements.

Geological Modeling and Mineral Resource Evaluation

• Integrate geological, drilling, geophysical, and geochemical data to develop geological interpretations and 3D models.
• Use GIS and geological modeling software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, Leapfrog, Micromine, or other applicable tools.
• Develop and update geological maps, sections, and geological models.
• Support the estimation and evaluation of iron ore mineral resources.
• Assist in interpreting ore body geometry, mineralization continuity, and ore quality distribution.
• Collaborate with resource geologists and mining engineers on resource estimation and mine planning.
• Identify areas requiring additional drilling, sampling, or geological investigation.
• Support the preparation of technical resource reports in accordance with applicable reporting standards and project requirements.

Exploration Planning and Project Management

• Prepare detailed exploration programs, work plans, budgets, and implementation schedules.
• Manage and monitor exploration activities to ensure compliance with approved plans.
• Supervise field geologists, geological technicians, survey teams, and other exploration personnel.
• Coordinate with drilling contractors, laboratories, and other technical service providers.
• Monitor exploration expenses and ensure the efficient utilization of project resources.
• Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising technical quality or safety.
• Prepare regular progress reports covering exploration activities, challenges, expenses, and key findings.
• Conduct post-exploration evaluations and recommend improvements to future programs.
• Provide technical recommendations regarding further exploration and potential mine development.

Technical Reporting and Documentation

• Prepare geological mapping, exploration, drilling, sampling, and resource evaluation reports.
• Review geological data and ensure the accuracy and completeness of technical documentation.
• Maintain organized records of geological maps, drill logs, laboratory results, survey data, and exploration reports.
• Present exploration findings and technical recommendations to senior management and project teams.
• Prepare technical presentations explaining geological information and exploration results.
• Support the preparation of feasibility studies and technical documentation for mine development.
• Ensure geological information is properly documented and available for future exploration and mining activities.

Health, Safety, Environment, and Social Affairs

• Implement and monitor health and safety procedures during geological fieldwork and exploration activities.
• Ensure exploration teams follow safety requirements during drilling, sampling, surveying, and field operations.
• Identify field hazards and take appropriate corrective and preventive measures.
• Monitor field conditions and ensure the safe operation of exploration activities.
• Support environmental assessments and the implementation of environmental mitigation measures.
• Ensure exploration activities comply with applicable environmental regulations and approved project requirements.
• Support the rehabilitation of exploration sites, including drill pads, trenches, and access areas, where required.
• Coordinate with local communities, government authorities, and stakeholders to facilitate exploration activities.
• Assist in obtaining required exploration permits and licenses in coordination with management.

Team Leadership and Technical Development

• Provide technical guidance and supervision to junior geologists, field technicians, and exploration teams.
• Conduct training and mentoring on geological mapping, sampling, core logging, and data collection.
• Establish and monitor quality control procedures for geological and exploration data.
• Promote the use of appropriate exploration technologies and methodologies.
• Evaluate the application of modern tools such as drones, remote sensing, AI-assisted geological analysis, and other relevant technologies.
• Maintain professional knowledge of developments in geological exploration and iron ore resource evaluation.
• Coordinate with Mining Engineers, Environmental Specialists, Surveyors, and other professionals to align exploration objectives with project requirements.

Coordination and Additional Responsibilities

• Coordinate exploration activities between the Geology Department, Mining Department, Project Manager, contractors, and senior management.
• Ensure exploration activities are conducted according to approved technical plans and industry best practices.
• Maintain effective working relationships with relevant government authorities, including the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum.
• Provide technical advice on exploration priorities and geological risks.
• Support the development of strategies for future exploration and potential iron ore extraction.
• Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor to support project and company objectives.

Reports to: Mining Program Manager / Mining Project Manager

Qualifications and Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Geology, Economic Geology, Mineral Exploration, Earth Sciences, or a related field. A Master's degree is preferred.
• Minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience in geological mapping, mineral exploration, and resource evaluation, preferably in iron ore mining.
• Practical experience in geological mapping, mineral sampling, drilling, and core logging.
• Knowledge of iron ore geology, mineralization, and geological resource evaluation.
• Proficiency in GIS software, including ArcGIS or QGIS.
• Experience with geological modeling software such as Leapfrog, Micromine, Surfer, or equivalent.
• Understanding of geophysical and geochemical exploration methods.
• Knowledge of geological data management, sampling quality control, and laboratory analysis.
• Familiarity with mineral resource estimation methods and applicable reporting standards.
• Strong technical report writing, data analysis, and geological interpretation skills.
• Strong project planning, budgeting, and organizational abilities.
• Full proficiency in Dari and Pashto, with a working knowledge of English.
• Ability to work in remote mining locations and challenging field conditions.
• Strong communication, teamwork, and coordination skills.
• Commitment to health and safety, environmental protection, and technical quality.
• Ability to provide technical guidance and make sound geological recommendations based on exploration results.
