Job Descriptions:

Job Purpose:

The Pharmacist is responsible for ensuring the safe, effective, and efficient management of pharmaceutical services within the hospital (KNEH). This includes procuring, storing, dispensing, and monitoring medications, maintaining accurate inventory records, counseling patients on the proper use of medicines, supporting ophthalmologists and clinical staff with pharmaceutical information, and ensuring compliance with national pharmaceutical regulations and hospital policies.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks (with approximate % of time):

1.       Medication Dispensing and Patient Counseling (35%)

·       Review prescriptions for completeness, accuracy, and appropriateness before dispensing.

·       Dispense medications accurately according to physicians' prescriptions.

·       Counsel patients on medication dosage, administration, storage, precautions, and possible side effects.

·       Ensure patients understand the importance of medication adherence.

·       Provide pharmaceutical advice related to ophthalmic medications and treatments.

·       Verify patient identity before dispensing medications.

2.       Pharmaceutical Inventory and Stock Management (25%)

·       Receive, inspect, and properly store all pharmaceutical products.

·       Maintain accurate stock records using inventory management systems or stock cards.

·       Monitor stock levels and initiate timely replenishment requests.

·       Ensure proper storage conditions for medicines, including temperature-sensitive products.

·       Conduct routine stock counts and reconciliation.

·       Report damaged, expired, or obsolete medicines according to hospital procedures.

3.       Prescription Review and Clinical Support (15%)

·       Review prescriptions for potential drug interactions, allergies, contraindications, and dosage errors.

·       Provide pharmaceutical guidance to ophthalmologists and nursing staff when required.

·       Support rational medicine use throughout the hospital.

·       Participate in medication safety initiatives.

·       Assist in developing and updating pharmacy-related procedures.

4.       Pharmacy Documentation and Regulatory Compliance (15%)

·       Maintain complete and accurate pharmacy records and reports.

·       Ensure compliance with Ministry of Public Health regulations and hospital pharmacy policies.

·       Maintain proper documentation for controlled or restricted medicines where applicable.

·       Participate in internal and external pharmacy audits.

·       Ensure confidentiality of patient information and pharmacy records.

5.       Quality Improvement, Reporting and Staff Support (10%)

·       Participate in quality improvement and patient safety activities.

·       Prepare monthly pharmacy consumption and stock reports.

·       Support health education and awareness activities related to medicine use.

·       Participate in continuing professional development and pharmacy training.

·       Assist colleagues in maintaining efficient pharmacy operations.

6.       General Responsibilities

·       Follow all hospital policies, procedures, and ethical standards.

·       Always maintain patient confidentiality.

·       Promote rational use of medicines.

·       Ensure safe handling and disposal of pharmaceutical waste.

·       Participate in meetings, training sessions, and quality improvement initiatives.

·       Maintain a clean, organized, and secure pharmacy.

·       Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor that are consistent with the position.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

1.       Educational Background:

·       Diploma in pharmacy from a recognized institution. However, bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from a recognized institution is preferred.

2.       Professional Experience:

·       2–3 years of experience as a pharmacist, preferably in a hospital or healthcare setting.

·       Knowledge of ophthalmic medications and treatments is an advantage.

·       Familiarity with Afghanistan’s pharmacy regulations and MoPH guidelines.

3.       Technical Skills:

·       Strong knowledge of drug interactions and safe medication practices.

·       Experience with inventory management and pharmacy software.

·       Excellent communication skills in Pashto, Dari, and English.
