AWEC has successfully implemented projects in Logar, Faryab, Kapisa, Khost, Panjshir, Wardak, Kabul, Balkh, Herat, Nangarhar, Kandahar, Badakhshan, Parwan, Paktia, Paktika, Laghman, Nuristan, and Bamyan provinces, maintaining an active presence in Kabul, Balkh, Herat, Nangarhar, Kandahar, Badakhshan, Parwan, Paktia, Paktika, Laghman, Nuristan, and Bamyan.

Job Descriptions:

The Community Mobilization/ Hygiene Promoter couple is a field-based position responsible for mobilizing communities to participate in AWEC’s programs while simultaneously delivering hygiene promotion sessions and WASH-related behavior change activities. The role links community engagement with public health outcomes, ensuring that vulnerable populations – particularly women, children, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) – adopt safe hygiene practices and utilize WASH facilities. This position requires frequent travel to remote communities and close coordination with local leaders, Shuras, and health/nutrition partners.

Responsibilities:

Mobilize communities to support AWEC integrated programs (WASH, education, protection, livelihoods) through meetings, home visits, and group discussions.

Promote safe WASH practices by conducting hygiene promotion sessions, door-to-door visits, and behavior change communication using participatory approaches.

Organizes and facilitates community meetings, focus group discussions, and hygiene awareness sessions.

Build and maintain strong relationships with CDCs, Shuras, religious leaders, and key community influencers.

Form and train WASH groups to promote hygiene best practices and climate‑related WASH awareness.

Conduct hygiene promotion sessions using participatory methods such as demonstrations, storytelling, and group activities.

Identify and register vulnerable beneficiaries for dignity kit, protection, and WASH interventions.

Distribute dignity kits and demonstrate proper use while promoting key messages on handwashing, safe water, sanitation, and MHM.

Conduct household follow-ups to monitor behavior change and reinforce hygiene practices.

Carry out WASH assessments, surveys, and post-distribution monitoring, and maintain accurate records and reports.

Perform any other tasks assigned by the line manager.

Job Requirements:

Education and Experience:

A minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Nursing, Social Sciences, Community Development, related field or 14 Grade Graduated.

At least 2 years of combined experience in community mobilization and hygiene promotion / WASH projects with an NGO in Afghanistan.

Experience working with AWEC or similar women-focused organizations is an advantage. Proven experience in conducting participatory hygiene sessions for women and girls in conservative settings.

Knowledge and Skills:

Deep understanding of local cultural norms, barriers to hygiene behavior change, and community power structures in Afghanistan.

Ability to use PHAST (Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation) or CLTS (Community-Led Total Sanitation) methodologies is highly desirable.

Strong facilitation, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work independently under remote and insecure conditions.

Basic data collection and report writing skills (English or Dari/Pashto).

Commitment to gender equality and inclusion.

Fluency in Pashto and Dari (spoken and written) – mandatory.

Working knowledge of English (reading and writing simple reports) – preferred.

Willingness to travel extensively to villages and remote areas, often on foot or by public transport.
