Tdh has been working in Afghanistan since 1995 and carry out projects related to Child Protection, Mother and Child Health and Livelihood Programs in Kabul & Nangarhar provinces

The Nutrition Counselor is responsible for providing Screening (anthropometric measurement) of children under 5 years of age and PLW  regularly to identify cases of malnutrition. 

1. Screening of the children under age of 5 for malnutrition
2. Screening of the PLW for the malnutrition
3. Complete growth monitoring for children under 2.
4. Refer complicated case of SAM to the advance health facilities in Nanagarhar province

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Provide nutrition counselling to pregnant and lactating women on MIYCN.
2. Carry out the screening of children under five and pregnant and lactating women via using anthropometric measurements.
3. Document the screened children and pregnant and lactating women
4. Carry out the growth monitoring of children under 2 eyars old
5. To identify SAM and MAM cases through screening of children under 5
6. To refer the SAM and MAM cases to medical doctor/nutrition nurse for further treatment though nutrition supplements (RUTF and RUSF)
7. Impart health education to women on maternal nutrition via using the IEC materials
8. Conduct food demonstration during health education sessions at community and health facility level.
9. To register the SAM and MAM cases in standard register of MoPH/PND
10. To follow up the treatment of SAM and MAM cases for finding of defaulter cases.

• Must have graduated from a nursing or midwifery institute with the nutrition counselling standard training from the Public Nutrition Department of MoPH or other entities.
• At least have 3 years of experience working as a nutrition counsellor in any health facility

• and with an international NGO in the remote area of the country

• Be able to speak the national language
• to demonstrate a good knowledge of the identification of SAM and MAM cases
• have experience and competency in transferring nutrition education to pregnant and lactating women during the health education sessions.
• To understand the nutrition-related documents and HMIS tools
• To be fluent in local languages, including Dari and Pashto
• To have strong communication skills
• Knowledge of nutrition, breastfeeding, child feeding, and malnutrition.
• Ability to assess nutrition status (MUAC, weight, height).
• Good counselling and communication skills with families.
• Cultural sensitivity and respect for local practices.
• Teamwork with other health staff and referral of cases.
• Record keeping and simple reporting.
• Patience, empathy, and adaptability in mobile/remote settings.
