Since 2006, the French Medical Institute for Mothers and Children (FMIC) in Kabul, Afghanistan, has served patients from all 34 provinces. Operated through a public-private partnership among the Governments of Afghanistan and France, La Chaine de L’Espoir, and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), with management by the Aga Khan University, FMIC delivers world-class medical services and drives healthcare innovation in the region.

FMIC provides specialized consultations, advanced diagnostics (CT, MRI, radiology), surgeries, a 24/7 pharmacy, and state-of-the-art laboratory testing. It has recorded over 2.3 million patient visits and consultations, conducted 6.8 million laboratory tests, and performed 59,000 surgeries, including more than 5,700 paediatric and adult cardiac procedures. As Afghanistan’s first ISO and SafeCare-certified hospital (recertified in 2024), FMIC has pioneered open-heart surgery, advanced diagnostics, and telemedicine, earning the IHF Award in 2021.

With a 176-bed capacity and a highly skilled Afghan medical team, FMIC is committed to advancing healthcare excellence. Through its Patient Welfare Support Programme, it has provided over $57.6 million in subsidized or free care, ensuring equitable access to high-quality treatment for vulnerable populations. 

Regular Responsibilities:

·         Provides comprehensive care to neonates, infants, children and adolescents with different disease process from basic to complex including patients’/family education and support.

·         Demonstrates knowledge and skills of age-related variations and normal parameters of vital signs of neonates, infants, children and adolescents   patients.

·         Administers medication safely according to age doses.

·         Educates patients or parents/guardians about disease process, treatment options and discharge instructions.

·         Prepare patients for surgery or procedure.

·         Demonstrates knowledge and skills related to all equipment being used in Unit.

·         Demonstrates safe care for patients undergoing conscious sedation procedure.

·         Performs routine unit specific procedures independently or with minimal supervision.

·         Assists in handling cardiac arrest situations.

·         Follows time out policy.

·         Performs hands off (bedside over) and carries out special assignment.

·         Utilizes SBAR technique to notify patient’s condition

·         Demonstrates safe handling and proper use of equipment/supplies.

·         Participate actively in patient /family & staff education with the assistance of Nurse Instructor.

·         Provides safe environment for the patients by following infection control policies and applying safety measures for patients.

·         Participates in combining rounds and discusses patient care plans with physicians on their rounds.

·         Practices safe central/peripheral line therapies and monitors patients’ responses and takes action accordingly.

·         Demonstrates knowledge and skills in handling high risk patients/services.

·         Follows admission/transfer/discharge process according to hospital protocol.

·         Provides mentorship to novice staff in provision of safe nursing care in compliance with Hospital policies and procedures

·         Guides new staff in provision of safe nursing care and in compliance of Hospital policies and procedures.

·         Supervises the clinical practices of nursing students and novice staff and guides them accordingly.

·         Updates own skills by attending certification and recertification courses as per credentialing requirement.   

·         Provides bereavement care to the family of deceased patient.

·         Able to interpret and communicate panic lab results to physicians.   

·         Incorporates clinical knowledge including diseases, drugs and dosages into practice and anticipates care and acts accordingly

·         Follows institutional policy for handling Patients’ valuables.

·         Maintains & ensures medical/surgical supplies stock at required level.

·         Assess patient’s concerns/complaints on shift basis to enhance patients’ satisfaction.

Academic & professional qualifications

·         Graduate of an accredited Nursing Diploma program / bachelor of science in nursing

·         Registered with the Afghanistan Nurses and Midwives Council (ANMC)

Work experience:

·         1-2 years of experience in nursing is preferred.
